Fabric Care Tips for Long-Lasting Elegance

· Rajesh Khanna

Most fabrics last longer with simple, regular care.

Dust. Vacuum upholstery, and brush or vacuum curtains, regularly on a low setting with a soft brush.

Spills. Blot, do not rub, and treat them quickly. Test any cleaner on a hidden patch first.

Sunlight. Strong sun fades colour and weakens fibre over time. Sheer layers or a lining on sun-facing windows help.

Check the label. Some fabrics, including many velvets and silks, need dry cleaning, while others can be washed. Follow the maker's instructions.

Cushions. Turn and rotate seat and back cushions so wear is spread evenly.

For a deep clean of sofas or large curtains, use a professional cleaner who knows the fabric type.
